Nurture Yourself with Financial Wellness

I haven’t always been great with money.

Surprise!

In fact, there have been several times in my life when I was WAY over my head in credit card debt and didn’t know how I was going to climb out of the hole I had dug for myself. How did I get there? I was raised in a family that had solid values around money. Where did I steer off course?

There are 3 personal finance skills I did not master until well into mid-life:

1) Live within your means

2) Talk about money matters with your loved ones, and

3) Manage your financial wellness as part of your self care.

My whole outlook changed when I learned these skills (the hard way!), specifically setting a mindset of Financial Wellness as self care.

In today’s fast-paced world, self care is often associated with bubble baths, spa days, meditation, or yoga.

Like all things adulting, eating well, playing in moderation, getting regular exercise and quality sleep keeps you in balance. When you prioritize your financial wellness, you’re investing in peace of mind, stronger relationships, and improved mental health, which goes a long way in improving your quality of life.

By making financial wellness a habit of self care, you set yourself up for a life of joy and fulfillment for years to come.

So, why does this matter? When you take control of your money, you take control of your well-being.

Studies show that there is a strong, often cyclical relationship between mental health and financial wellness, where financial stress can exacerbate mental health issues, and poor mental health can negatively impact financial decisions and stability.

Here are 5 ways managing your financial wellness directly impacts your mental health and personal relationships.

  1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety Financial instability is one of the leading causes of stress. When you create a budget, set financial goals, curb impulse spending and establish emergency savings, you reduce uncertainty and build a sense of security.

  2. Improves Sleep Quality Worrying about unpaid bills or mounting debt can keep you up at night. Knowing your finances are in order allows you to rest easier, leading to better sleep and overall well-being.

  3. Prevents Money Conflicts in Relationships

Money disagreements are among the top 3 areas of conflict in relationships. By working as teammates, budgeting together, discussing financial goals, and maintaining transparency, couples can avoid conflicts and keep their connection strong. A breech of financial trust with your sweetie, known as financial infidelity, can be just as devistating to the relationship as emotional or physical infidelity.

  4. Reduces Feelings of Guilt and Shame

Poor financial habits can lead to negative self talk and shame. By actively taking the steps to manage your finances and make informed decisions, you replace guilt with empowerment. And learning to say no to unnecessary expenses, loans to friends, or over-committing financially allows you to protect your own well-being and focus on your priorities.

  5. Prepares You for Unexpected Life Events

Life can get pretty crazy, and we all hit financial bumps now and then. Having an emergency fund to fall back on when things go sideways means you can keep up with your bills and run your household without stressing about losing your home or getting your power cut off. It helps reduce panic and stress when you've already got a lot going on.

One of the best strategies to take control of your money and your well-being is to build a daily Financial Wellness routine.
